    In-flight Diagnostics in LISA Pathfinder

    LISA PathFinder (LPF) will be flown with the objective to test in space key technologies for LISA. However its sensitivity goals are, for good reason, one order of magnitude less than those which LISA will have to meet, both in drag-free and optical metrology requirements, and in the observation frequency band. While the expected success of LPF will of course be of itself a major step forward to LISA, one might not forget that a further improvement by an order of magnitude in performance will still be needed. Clues for the last leap are to be derived from proper disentanglement of the various sources of noise which contribute to the total noise, as measured in flight during the PathFinder mission. This paper describes the principles, workings and requirements of one of the key tools to serve the above objective: the diagnostics subsystem. This consists in sets of temperature, magnetic field, and particle counter sensors, together with generators of controlled thermal and magnetic perturbations. At least during the commissioning phase, the latter will be used to identify feed-through coefficients between diagnostics sensor readings and associated actual noise contributions. A brief progress report of the current state of development of the diagnostics subsystem will be given as well.Peer Reviewe

    Colitis colĂĄgena: estudio clinicopatolĂłgico de seis nuevos casos

    Collagenous colitis (CC) is a newly recognized entity characterized clinically by chronic watery diarrhoea and pathologically by epithelial inflammatory injury and the presence of a thickened collagen band beneath the surface epithelium of the colon. Clinical and pathological data of six patients (5 women and 1 man, mean age 54 years) with this diagnosis have been reviewed. Chronic watery diarrhoea was the main sympton in all cases, ranging from 2 to 12 bowel movements a day (mean ± SD, 5,5 ± 2,3) lasting from 8 months to 19 years (mean ± SD, 6,6 ± 5,9 years). Laboratory, barium and endoscopic studies showed unspecific findings. Rheumatic and thyroid diseases as well as drug allergies were found in five cases. The cause of collagenous colitis and the mechanism of diarrhoea remains undefined, being the inflammatory and autoinmune hypothesis the most likely. Diagnosis was made by multiple rectal and colonic biopsies. Pathologic findings characteristic of CC were more prominent in proximal than in distal colonic specimens.     La macrobiopsia endoscĂłpica en el diagnĂłstico de la enfermedad de Menetrier

    For the anatompathological diagnosis of Menetrier's disease to be made, it is necessary to have a biopsy covering the entire thickness of the mucosa. Until a few years ago, to obtain this it was necessary to resort to a surgical biopsy performed during the course of a laparotomy. We present our experience in 6 patients suffering from this disease, in whom the conventional biopsies taken during the course of a gastroscopy, did not enable us to make the anatomopathological diagnosis of the said entity. The performing during the same exploration of an endoscopic macrobiopsy taken with a polypectomy loop provided us with the diagnosis. The simplicity, harmlessness and abscence of complications as well as its diagnostic efficiency, along with the fact that a laparotomy is avoided, mean that this technique is vitally important in the diagnosis of Menetrier's disease

    Rumination syndrome is a disorder of unknown etiology characterized by regurgitation of recently ingested food. We aimed to improve the diagnosis of rumination syndrome by classification of separate rumination symptoms using (1) an ambulatory manometry/impedance (AMIM) measurement and (2) a single-catheter high-resolution manometry/impedance (HRIM) measurement. A total of 96 symptoms during AMIM and 37 symptoms during HRIM were analyzed in five patients with clinically diagnosed rumination syndrome. AMIM identified rumination events in 85 out of 96 reported symptoms (symptom index (SI): 89%). Of these events, 63% were non-acidic and would have been missed by pH-metry. HRIM identified 32 out of 37 reported symptoms (SI: 86%). Upper esophageal sphincter (UES) relaxation was observed during all rumination events identified by HRIM and could be an additional criterion in the definition of rumination events. Impedance measurement and high-resolution manometry contribute to a more detailed description of rumination events. Rumination events defined as gastric strain, common cavity phenomenon, retrograde esophageal fluid flow, and UES relaxation show a high SI when measured with AMIM or single-catheter HRI
